Tears For Fears Concert Review (10/3/16 in Morrison, CO)

October 4, 2016
Tears For Fears performed for 8,000+ fans at Red Rocks Amphitheater Monday night on what vocalist Curt Smith called a "slightly chilly evening" but it really was perfect weather for early October in the Rockies. Currently in the studio working on a new album due in 2017, there were no new songs in the set but old school fans came to hear the hits and TFF delivered the goods.

Seattle's Robert DeLong (now living in Denver) opened the show and served as one-man wrecking crew – bouncing back and forth between various keyboards/synths and drums all while singing '80s flavored technopop tunes.

The stage went black to Lorde's 2013 cover of "Everybody Wants To Rule The World" before Roland Orzabal and Curt Smith came out to perform the original version. It was ballsy to sing your biggest hit right off the bat, but it worked. "Secret World" was next, one of three songs in the set from TFF's last album, 2004's Everybody Loves A Happy Ending, 12 long years ago. 1989's "Sowing The Seeds Of Love" followed and instead of singing the original lyrics "Sowing the seeds, an end to need, and the politics of greed," Roland playfully snarled "Those Goddamn politics."

"Change", "Mad World" and "Memories Fade" gave fans a killer 1-2-3 punch from TFF's 1983 debut, The Hurting. "Break It Down Again" was the only tune performed from 1993's underrated Elemental and they didn't touch one of my favorite albums Raoul And The Kings Of Spain from 1995. Too many great tunes and not enough time.

The band and Orzabal's voice were flawless. Roland paused to admire the majesty of Red Rocks saying, "This is amazing. This is incredible. Look at this amazing structure that Mother Nature has provided." Smith added, "If I could just echo my partner's words…..WOW!"

The biggest surprise in the set was a slow, moody cover of Michael Jackson's "Billie Jean" which ended up being one of the highlights of the evening along with a spirited "Head Over Heels." By the time the encore "Shout" had finished and the house lights came on, I couldn't believe the show was already over. Maybe I'll just have to drive down to Colorado Springs on Wednesday night to see the show all over again!
