FERG BLURBS -- T-Pain Wins The Masked Singer

If you didn't know he could sing, now you know.

As you've heard previously on my show, I've been an avid watcher of the FOX show "The Masked Singer," which pits random celebrities in disguise, singing their hearts out, and a panel of judges/studio audience to score and guess who's who. The show has exploded in popularity as the season has gone on, leading up to last night's conclusion.

Last night's finale had the three remaining celebrities (Bee, Peacock, Monster) duke it out for the Golden Mask, and in a shocking end, it was the Monster, revealed to be rapper T-Pain, that won the whole shebang, beating out the runner-up Peacock (Donnie Osmond) and the third-place Bee (Gladys Knight).

It was definitely a surprising end (I thought for sure the woman who brought us "Midnight Train To Georgia" would win in the end), but I had a sneaking feeling that T-Pain was behind the monster mask, and I knew he'd impress if given the chance. Sure, he's best known for his unapologetic use of "auto tune" on songs, which automatically corrects singing pitch and can be used to hide singing flaws, and T-Pain's been ostracized, at times, because of that. But if you watched this competition, you saw that T-Pain's got some serious chops. Check out his performance from last night, singing Montell Jordan's "This is How We Do It"

If that doesn't convince you, well, I have video that should DEFINITELY do the trick. T-Pain performed on NPR's famous "Tiny Desk" concert series a few years ago, and absolutely blew people away. Here was a guy who relies so much on production and technology, stripped down to just a keyboard and a mic, and it gave soul to songs that otherwise wouldn't reflect it.

The episode itself was a two hour affair, with the first half focused on reflecting back on the celebrities we unmasked along the way, which included:

- NFL WR Antonio Brown (The Hippo)

- Comic Tommy Chong (The Pineapple)

- NFL Personality Terry Bradshaw (The Deer)

- Comedienne Margaret Cho (The Poodle)

- Actress Tori Spelling (The Unicorn)

- Talk Show Host Ricki Lake (The Raven)

- Singer LaToya Jackson (The Alien)

- Actress Rumor Willis (The Lion)

- Singer Joey Fatone (The Rabbit)

FOX is already working on a 2nd season, that promises to be a lot more challenging, when it comes to keeping the identities of the contestants a secret. Either way, I'll be watching and guessing with the rest of the world.
